Case Studies
The HSI's case studies are the foundation for all of the seminars. The lessons learned in past emergencies set up the ground work for the future response. These case studies serve as a large benefit to the organization by providing thorough insight to the past and the causing factors of past emergencies. The HSI works with many subject matter experts to contract out these case studies.

Colonial Pipeline Ransomware
"In the 2010's, ransomware exploded as a threat to corporations, government agencies, hospitals, schools and other organizations nationwide. With growing frequency, criminal hackers gained access to workplace computer networks, introduced pernicious code that shut them down and demanded a ransom."

PRNG & Hurricane Maria

Hurricane Harvey
"Harvey formed in the Gulf of Mexico and rapidly intensified into a Category 4 hurricane before hitting the Texas coast near Rockport on August 25. The storm brought torrential rainfall, with some areas receiving over 50 inches of rain. The catastrophic flooding resulted in the displacement of tens of thousands of people and caused significant damage to homes, infrastructure, and businesses."

Boston Marathon Bombing
"More than 400 Guard members were on state active duty for the Marathon on Monday, April 15. Bussed in early that morning from armories located across the state, the vast majority of them were stationed at intervals along the route, tasked with supporting local law enforcement in crowd control, managing car traffic, and ensuring that the course was kept clear for the runners."
2012
Superstorm Sandy
"Sandy originated in the Caribbean Sea and gradually intensified as it moved northward. It made landfall in southern New Jersey on October 29, causing strong winds, heavy rainfall, and a powerful storm surge along the coast. The storm surge coupled with high tides caused coastal communities to be inundated and cities to be overtaken by extensive flooding."

Pakistan Flood
"Early in the morning on August 3, 2010, six members of the Illinois Air National Guard climbed into a C-130H “Hercules” aircraft and took off from Bagram Airfield, a large U.S. military base just north of Kabul. Since deploying to Afghanistan earlier in the year, the crew had transported supplies to and conducted other support missions for U.S. combat units in the NATO-led war against the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Now, they were flying to Pakistan to deliver 6,000 halal meals to victims of recent flooding."

North Dakota Floods
"From March 17-28, 2009, North Dakota experienced some of the worst flooding in state history, prompting an extensive response from the National Guard and a range of federal, state, and local responders. The floods spanned the state, forcing the evacuation of several communities in western North Dakota and threatening the capital city, Bismarck, in central North Dakota, which had not previously flooded since 1952."
